Gautam Gambhir Defends Team and Captain Gill After India's Loss to EnglandGautam Gambhir

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the media with clarity and conviction following India’s defeat in the first Test against England. In his trademark no-nonsense style, Gambhir confronted difficult questions head-on during the post-match press conference on Tuesday, refusing to single out players or shy away from the issues.

When asked about India’s disappointing batting collapse, especially the poor contribution from the lower order, Gambhir was quick to defend his players. India’s tailenders (batting positions 8 to 11) managed just 9 runs across both innings, but Gambhir emphasized that effort was not lacking.

“First of all, it’s not that they weren’t applying themselves,” Gambhir said. “Sometimes people fail—and that’s part of the game. Of course it’s disappointing, but trust me, no one is more disappointed than the players themselves. They knew we had a real opportunity. If we had reached 570 or 580 in the first innings, we could’ve taken control of the match.”

He was adamant that blame should not be placed on individuals, saying the team wins and loses as a unit. “They’re working hard in the nets. Even specialist batters fail sometimes. Hopefully, our lower order will learn from this and contribute more, but let’s be clear—that’s not the only reason we lost. There were several moments in the match where we had chances to win. I’m not going to sit here and blame the tail. We lose together, we win together.”

On Shardul Thakur’s Performance

Responding to criticism over Shardul Thakur’s underwhelming performance—just two wickets in the match— Gautam Gambhir clarified that Thakur was picked as a bowling all-rounder, not a frontline bowler.

“He was brought in as a bowling all-rounder. Sometimes the captain uses his instincts. Yes, Shardul bowled less, but that’s because [Ravindra] Jadeja was controlling one end really well,” Gambhir explained. “Shardul took two important wickets that brought us back into the game. I won’t judge based on just the numbers. The key now is consistency, and these boys will get better with time.”

Gautam Gambhir On Gill’s Captaincy

Gambhir also came out in support of debutant captain Shubman Gill, who suffered a loss in his first match as skipper. Despite the result, Gambhir praised Gill’s temperament and leadership qualities.

“It’s his first Test as captain, and of course there were nerves. But it’s a huge honour, and he handled it well. The way he batted in the first innings, scoring a hundred under pressure—that speaks volumes,” said Gambhir.

“He’s got all the tools to become a successful captain. We just need to be patient. This is just the beginning. Captaining in tough conditions isn’t easy—it’s like being thrown into the deep end. But I believe he’ll emerge as a strong, mature leader.”

With the second Test approaching, Gambhir’s message was clear: the team must learn from its mistakes, stay united, and bounce back stronger.
