Leeds: England’s dynamic batter Harry Brook delivered a statement performance on Day 3 of the first Test against India, showcasing his trademark aggression and game-changing ability. After walking in to bat at No. 5 on Day 2 and surviving a potential dismissal off a Jasprit Bumrah no-ball, Brook capitalized fully on the opportunity the next day.
The right-hander smashed a scintillating 99 off 112 balls, hammering 11 fours and 2 sixes, and narrowly missed out on what could have been a memorable Test century. His attacking innings came at a strike rate of 88.39, putting the Indian bowlers under sustained pressure and helping England reach 465 in their first innings, in reply to India’s 471.
Pujara Praises Brook’s Maturity and Fearlessness
Speaking to Sony Sports, veteran Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara—who has shared a dressing room with Brook during their time at Yorkshire—praised the Englishman’s evolution and intent.
“I’ve seen his journey since his first-class debut at Yorkshire. He’s matured a lot and is now leading from the front in white-ball cricket for England,” Pujara noted. “The kind of shots he played today — not many players can do that.”
Pant Comparison: ‘Fearless and Disruptive’
Pujara didn’t stop at just praising Brook’s technique. He went on to draw a striking comparison between Brook and Rishabh Pant, who had scored a thrilling century in India’s first innings.
“I can see a little bit of Rishabh Pant in him. While their approaches differ, both are fearless. They look to disrupt a bowler’s length, constantly putting pressure back on the opposition — and that’s what makes them dangerous,” Pujara said.
He emphasized the impact players like Brook and Pant can have, especially when the team is in trouble:
“These are the kind of batters who can shift momentum rapidly. Brook’s high strike rate makes him a tough batter to contain, and he has that rare ability to take the game away in a session.”
Match Situation: India Lead by 96
At the close of play on Day 3, India were 90/2 in their second innings, holding a slender lead of 96 runs. KL Rahul (47) and captain Shubman Gill (6) will look to build on that advantage when play resumes on Day 4 at Headingley.
With the match finely poised and both teams showcasing resilience and flair, Day 4 promises another gripping chapter in this closely contested Test.
